Speaker_Points:
-Speakers must debate in a clear and comprehendible manner. If I'm spending
time trying to figure out what someone is saying, then I'm spending less time
analyzing their case; that is a very bad thing.
-Speakers should know how to speak properly and fluently. It's a simple idea,
but also one which often goes over some people's heads.
-Speakers should be persuasive. However, try to convince me why I should take
your side, not that I'd be wrong if I took some other side.
General_Comments:
I'm a man of logic. The use of logic in arguments is very very important to
me. Using fallacious arguments will often prompt me to disregard all further
points extrapolated from the original fallacy.
Don't assume quoting 300 famous people (former presidents, congresspeople, et
cetera) will persuade me. Show me the facts and rationale behind the argument,
not that 300 other people agree with it.
Ultimately, I believe tournament debate should be a "chess game" played in the
minds of the participants. While remaining the scope of the rules and policies
for proving cases, debaters should be able to see how the opponent is going to
respond to some argument and have a plan in place to counterspell that attack.
The opponent should also try to see this and work to counterspell that maneuver
as well. It's very in-depth to me; the ability to think "X moves ahead" gives
a player a definite advantage over any others. Granted, a player who thinks 6
moves ahead and makes 6 bad moves still won't win...

Quality of delivery.
Professionalism in round.
Did you make your point with a minimum number of contentions?

You should help me understand your examples and evidence and how they relate
back to your VC, VP, and finally the Resolution. Direct clash is great but it
needs to be connected as noted above. Make sure I know what your voting issues
are and where the holes are in your opponents speech.

General_Comments:
I judged faster LD rounds last year and I do policy at UF now so I'm more than
capable of handling speed. I'm also able to handle the unusual case
positions. That being said, I don't particularly care for either in LD. In
general you'll never lose a ballot to any judge for going too slowly (if what
you say matters) but you can definitely lose one for going to fast. I'm not
big on speed and the extremes in LD (anymore) but I still don't believe in
intervening so what you want to do and what you say to do is what I'll vote
on.

Because I am currently a policy debater, I can flow speed. HOWEVER, I don't
see its utility in LD rounds given that you shouldn't be reading 700 cards
during the debate. Therefore, make sure your pace is good (that's not to say I
wan't you to be slow...just don't spread) and that you are CLEAR!
General_Comments:
I debated LD for 4 years and am currently a policy debater. I tend to think I
am one of the few judges out there that realizes the distinction and won't
evaluate the debate from a "policy-esque" standpoint. That being said, I think
that the line-by-line is very important to me, but I also think the way you
crystallize will gain you a good deal of ground. Explain the issues and why
you DESERVE my ballot, not just why you think that since you talk pretty you
ought to win.

Wins and Losses are based on argument, not speaker points. 2/3rd of your
speaker points are determined by you pace, articulation, done, voice
inflections, etc. during your speeches. 1/3 of your speaker points are based on
your performance in cross-examination, where you have far less time to prepare
and must think on your feet. Any individual who is rude to their peers will
receive the lowest points possible.
General_Comments:
1) Stand while you debate, no sitting
2) No materials will be reviewed after the debate. If you do not get your point
across during debate, it is too late. Graphs and blowups have no place in LD.
3) Debate is about communication, if you speak so fast as to disadvantage both
myself and your peers in fully understanding your logic, it will be detrimental
to your case.
4) Most of all, I want to know what YOU, the STUDENT thinks, not someone else,
so any information provided from a source other than the your own mind needs
analysis to back it up.

General_Comments:
Summary: I am unbiased on any resolution. Back up your claims with evidence. I
FLOW, but if a competitor drops a minor argument I do not immediately give them
the loss. I base my decision on the arguments made by the competitors.
Expanded LD Philosophy:
1) The most important part of LD Debate for me is how the CASE is structured
and presented, with clearly stated value/criterion/facts/impacts/statements
that includes backup and examples. Your facts and statistics must have come
from somewhere or you have made up your case. Building your case is like
building a fortress; if it is made of strong material then your opponent's
attack will fail. If you're the one attacking, do so with logical arguments,
good examples, and analogies and not just because you say so and it makes sense
to you.
2) During the cross examinations if you ask or allow someone to re-state their
case because you didn't hear or understand it - this gives the opponent a huge
advantage to add to and clarify points (that may not have been heard or
understood by the judge) and completely strengthen their position/fortress -
thus putting you even more in a defensive/catch-up position; i.e. your now
losing and may not recover. The cross is for you to hit as many pieces of your
opponent's case with logical arguments and analogies - thus tearing apart their
fortress.
3) In the Rebuttal rounds - DO NOT WHINE OR TELL ME WHAT TO DO. Don't use your
time to tell me how many "cards" were dropped and how your case should carry
throughout the round and how I must vote for you. I am flowing the round just
like you are; briefly state what part of your case was not attacked and you
will get credit for it if you're correct. It is more important to re-build and
strengthen the parts of your case that were attacked with facts, examples, and
analogies. After that, continue to attack your opponent with logical arguments
as to why their criterion and examples are wrong.

Do not sacrifice clarity for speed.
General_Comments:
I allow you to determine the content of the debate. I'm not going to weigh
philosophy higher than example or vice versa. I am going to judge based on
whether or not you adequately 1) proved your own case and 2) refuted your
opponant's. Just doing one of those isn't going to cut it.
In order to win, EVERYTHING needs to be linked back to the value through the
value criteria. This should be accomplished by upholding your framework while
telling me the holes in your opponant's. Spreading is fine, in fact I encourage
it, as long as you're capable of also giving me the big picture at the end with
key voting issues. I should have clear reasons to vote for you, not have to
shuffle through a jumble of notes.

Speaker_Points:
Quality of argument is the most important aspect, the whole purpose of debate
is to convince the listener through a solid argument. Vocal variation such as
emphasizing points through excited speech aids in convincing.
General_Comments:
I prefer students to state clearly three points for their argument.

General_Comments:
I only started judging LD because one of Cecil's students began competing in
that area and needed a judge. I previously had been judging PFD and some
interp events.
